Pupil Ambassadors / School Council

At Smawthorne Henry Moore Academy, we are committed to ensuring every child has a voice and that their ideas are valued. Our pupils play an active role in shaping school life, learning from an early age that their opinions matter and that they can make a real difference.

Each year, every class elects a representative to join the Student Council. In Year Six, pupils also vote for a Head Boy and Head Girl, giving them further opportunities to experience democracy in action. From the start of the academic year, council members learn about respect, responsibility, and decision-making, developing vital skills for life beyond primary school.

The School Council meets weekly to discuss agendas, share feedback, put forward ideas, and make decisions together. Their work is shared on our ‘Pupil Voice’ board, allowing the whole school to see the progress being made. Councillors have organised charity events, led fundraising initiatives such as the Halloween Social, and suggested improvements to playground equipment—helping to make school a better place for everyone.

Our councillors are enthusiastic, responsible, and committed to representing their classmates. They listen carefully, respect different viewpoints, and work as a team to bring about positive change. By leading with kindness, fairness, and responsibility, they set an example to others and help create a school community where every child feels valued and heard.

Beyond the Student Council, we offer a wide range of leadership opportunities so that every pupil can find a role suited to their strengths and interests. These include Eco-Warriors, who promote sustainability; Friendship Ambassadors, who encourage kindness and inclusion; Happiness Heroes, who support wellbeing; House Captains, who foster teamwork and healthy competition; and Sports Leaders, who inspire others through physical activity.

Through these opportunities, pupils develop confidence, communication skills, and a strong sense of responsibility. Most importantly, they learn that leadership is not just a title, but a chance to make a positive difference. At Smawthorne Henry Moore Academy, we are proud of our young leaders, who show creativity, compassion, and commitment as they help shape both our school and their wider community.
